Don’t Make Bob Dole Angry

May 30, 2008 · 1 Comment

You won’t like Bob Dole when he’s angry.

McLellan gets pwned.

“There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues,” Dole wrote in a message sent yesterday morning. “No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique.”

The fact that we can follow the money to Soros just proves Dole’s point.  Funny how Mclellan was derided as a bumbling fool by the left when he was Bush’s press secretary - but now he’s a man of unimpeachable credentials speaking truth to power.  What an ass.

And no, I don’t know what causes Bob Dole’s Illeism.

Expat Texan Picante

May 28, 2008 · No Comments

One of the great tragedies of living in Calgary is the fact that there is no good Tex-Mex food to be had.  There are a few Mexican restaurants, but no Tex-Mex.  Similarly, the grocery stores have an appalling lack of ingredients for making your own.  Now, I realize I can’t expect the same level of choices that I had in Texas, but give me SOMETHING.  One of the things I miss the most is a good Picante.  All of the Picantes and Salsas I can buy here are too mild and too chunky.  If I want huge chunks of tomato and bell pepper - I would eat a salad.  Plus, who the hell puts bell pepper in a salsa?  To add insult to injury - Canadians are apparently not allowed to eat any commercially made salsa over “medium” hotness - perhaps by governmental decree out of concern for their sensitive palates.  So, I will share with you my recipe for a real Texas Picante sauce.  It is not chunky - it is meant to be a true SAUCE - eat in with chips, pour on a burrito, whatever.  It is spicy - hot enough to make your nose run, but still deliciously edible.  However - if you’re a native Canadian and have only eaten the crap available to you in stores, you should start slow.  This stuff may kill you otherwise.

Texas Picante Recipe:

20 Jalapeno peppers

4 Habanero peppers (optional - will ramp up the heat quickly)

4-6 White Onions (Sweet onions like Vidalia are the best, but not always available in Canada).

2-3 Large cans of crushed tomatoes (depends on how thick/hot you want your picante).  You can blanch, peel, and crush your own if so inclined.

2 cans tomato paste

2T ground Cumin

1C Sugar

2C White Vinegar

4-5 Cloves minced Garlic

4T Chili Powder (Chili - NOT Cayenne, unless you want insane hotness - which is better achieved with the fresh habaneros)

1T Salt

Preparation:

Chop the peppers and onions to desired consistency.  I like mine fairly fine, so chop in a food processor.  Only use the Habaneros if you really want hot salsa - otherwise stick to jalapenos.  You can decrease the number of peppers to fit your taste.  Wimp.

Combine all of the ingredients in a large sauce pan.  Bring to a boil, then simmer for 1-1.5 hours.  Place in sterilized canning jars, and process in boiling water for 15 minutes (or in pressure cooker for 5 mins at 10psi).  Makes ~10 pints, depending on number of jalapenos and cans of crushed tomatoes you used.  Should be thick but not chunky to be a true picante sauce (in my humble opinion).

One of my favorite lurking places on the web is Homesick Texan. Her recipe for an interesting sounding salsa here, the only way nachos should ever be made is here.  Great recipes, good old Texas cooking, and photos that make me want to either charter a flight home or cry.  I spent 14 years in New York City - and what passes for Mexican and Barbeque there is pretty limited.  But not as limited as Calgary - don’t even get me started about Calgarian barbeque.

I’ll See Your Tuzla, and Raise You an Auschwitz

May 27, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hillary had her Tuzla moment.  Now Obama ups the ante with an Auschwitz howler.  And it gets reported as indisputable fact by a gullible media.

Other reactions:

Michelle Malkin

Ace of Spades

Hot Air

Who liberated Auschwitz?  Why, the Russions, of course.

UPDATE:

The Obama camp has issued a release admitting their candidate’s “mistake”.  It wasn’t an uncle, but a great uncle, and Buchenwald, not Auschwitz.  I’m inclined to give him a bit of a break, because every family has tales that get changed and distorted over time.  Obama wasn’t there, so he could have just repeated what he had been told without ever critically thinking about it.  He probably is guilty of conflating great uncle with uncle to make it seem like a more immediate family impact (one assumes he knows that his mother had no brothers - especially old enough to have fought in WWII).

Hillary, by contrast, had first hand knowledge of the events in Tuzla - so I think her “error” is far more egregious.

UPDATE the Second:

The Washington Post talks about this in their “fact checker” feature - concluding that Obama is a little bit of a fibber.  Read the comments to see the Obama fanatics go nuts.  However, my favorite comment is this one:

I find it alarming how Obama supporters, along with much of the mainstream media easily discard this as a simple, unintended, and harmless gaffe. However, they would certainly scrutinize this comment if it were made by either Clinton, or McCain. Can’t everybody realize how important this election is? Can’t we put aside our partisanship long enough to see things as they are? We don’t want another idiot in office do we? What about the 57 states comment? Or the some of our fallen heroes are in the audience comment. There are many others. There is a pattern here that is showing Obama is either dishonest, intellectually lazy, or just not very bright to begin with.

I See Dead People

May 27, 2008 · 2 Comments

So, what’s wrong with this statement, from Obamessiah’s Memorial Day speech in New Mexico?

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

The list of Obama gaffes goes on and on and on.  If it was McCain - there would be media hysteria about his senile dementia.  But all is forgiven for the chosen one, for Obama.  One of his claims to fame was supposed to be his oratorial skills - no substance, but so much flash that no one (supposedly) noticed.  Now the flash is rapidly disappearing, and he looks less like a master statesman than a mistake prone goof.  Powerline has much more.

A Reminder for Memorial Day

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Texas Isn’t the Only Place With a Polygamy “Problem”

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

Apparently the GTA has a wee bit of a polygamist outbreak as well.

It was easy. He simply found an imam willing to break a Canadian law, in exchange for upholding an Islamic one.

“Polygamy is happening in Toronto; it’s not common, but it’s happening,” said Hindy, imam at Salahuddin Islamic Centre.

Hindy, hardly a stranger to controversy, is well known for his friendship with the family of Omar Khadr, the young Canadian detainee at Guantanamo Bay, and his outspoken views on the implementation of Islamic law. In the past five years, Hindy said he has officiated or “blessed” more than 30 polygamous marriages; the most recent was two months ago. Even some imams in the GTA have second wives, he added.

“This is in our religion and nobody can force us to do anything against our religion,” he said. “If the laws of the country conflict with Islamic law, if one goes against the other, then I am going to follow Islamic law, simple as that.” (emphasis added)

The inevitable result of what happens when you favor multiculturalism over assimilation.  It will be intersting to see how the Mormons will be treated, now that the idea of banning polygamy may be labeled, in some circles, as Islamophobic.
